Pest Control for Spiders

Spiders are often unsettling creatures, and many people find them downright terrifying. Thankfully, in New Zealand, there’s only one species—the Katipo—that poses a significant threat to humans. However, that doesn’t mean you want them in your home!

New Zealand's Pest Spiders

Katipo

  • Description: Female Katipo spiders have rounded black bodies with a white-bordered red stripe on their back and a red hourglass marking underneath. Males and juveniles are smaller and less toxic.
  • Habitat: Found on warm beaches; they are native to New Zealand but not considered pests.
  • Risk: The female’s bite is toxic but rarely encountered due to their dwindling numbers.

White-Tail Spider

  • Description: Slim spiders, 10–20mm long, greyish or brownish with orange-banded legs and a distinctive white tail.
  • Bite: Can cause pain, swelling, and discomfort but is not life-threatening.

Redback Spider

  • Description: Females are up to 30mm, males are smaller (15–25mm). Young Redbacks often display patterns instead of the characteristic red mark, while some adults may be entirely black.
  • Habitat: Found primarily around Auckland and Central Otago.
  • Risk: These spiders are venomous and should be treated with caution.

Grey House Spider

  • Description: Grey to black in color, up to 2.5cm long, with faint abdominal patterns. Known for creating webs around windows, doors, and eaves, often with a funnel-shaped entrance.
  • Risk: Harmless to humans, but their webs can be unsightly.

Cupboard Spider

  • Description: Originating from South Africa, these black or brown spiders are now widespread in New Zealand. Often mistaken for other species.
  • Bite: Generally harmless, with bites treatable using a cold compress.

Huntsman Spider

  • Description: Large, fast-moving spiders that are quite intimidating. Timid by nature, though they can become defensive when guarding eggs.
  • Risk: Their bite is not dangerous but can be frightening due to their size and speed.

Tunnel Web Spider

  • Description: The heaviest spider in New Zealand, commonly found in Wellington. They have red-tinted backs and black legs and create tunnels lined with webs.
  • Risk: Non-venomous and generally harmless to humans.
