Pest Control for Mice
Mice are among the most common and frustrating pests in New Zealand. They’re often heard scurrying around at night, and by morning, they’ve left a mess in your kitchen, tearing into whatever food they could find. Mice made their way to New Zealand aboard the Henrietta in 1824.
Mice can cause significant damage to your home’s infrastructure, including plumbing, electrical wiring, insulation, and even the exterior seals. Addressing an infestation promptly is essential to protect your property.
Mice are highly adept at finding ways into homes. They can squeeze through cracks as small as 6mm, climb walls, or enter through holes around pipes and cables. Gaps in doors, windows, vents, or damaged roofing are also common entry points. Once inside, they quickly find hiding places and begin causing damage.
Common New Zealand Mice
Field Mouse
Field mice usually avoid inhabited buildings but may shelter in sheds or outhouses during winter in search of food. They’re 80-100mm long and weigh between 20-25 grams.

House Mouse
The house mouse (Mus musculus) is a small rodent with a long snout, large rounded ears, and a nearly hairless tail. They measure 75-100mm in length and weigh between 11-30 grams.

Signs and Behavior
Mice are notorious for damaging HVAC systems, stealing food, and chewing through wires, plastics, and other soft materials. They contaminate surfaces like benchtops, sinks, and appliances with their urine and droppings, spreading diseases such as hantavirus, leptospirosis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, tularemia, and salmonella. Mouse droppings are smaller than those of rats, typically 6mm or less.
